German Chancellor Angela Merkel, who has led Europe's biggest economy for more than 11 years, announced that she is giving up the leadership of her party, a post she has held since 2000.
In a statement posted on Facebook on Thursday, Merkel said she would not seek re-election at the next CDU party congress in December but plans to remain chancellor. The move is widely seen as a way for the chancellor to ensure that the conservative party has a successor with sufficient support to succeed her.
Merkel has led the CDU since 2000 and Germany since 2005. She now turns to a protege, Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer, to see through Merkel's plan to give up the party leadership after 18 years. The 63-year-old is the general secretary of Merkel's Christian Democratic Union, and it is her job to ensure that a successor is in place before she steps down as chancellor.
"The chancellor put forward the proposal," Kramp-Karrenbauer said in a brief statement on Thursday. "Today we need a new voice in the German center. I am offering myself."
She added that it was important for the CDU to have a chancellor who stands for the party's principles and who leads with responsibility.
Kramp-Karrenbauer has Merkel's support to succeed her. Merkel, 64, has pushed for a new way of doing politics in Germany by emphasizing openness and tolerance, while also emphasizing the importance of Europe. But her cautious approach and insistence on consensus politics may have lost her support with some of the party's members and supporters.
